Course Overview

Herbal medicine -- also called botanical medicine or phytomedicine -- refers to using a plant's seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes. Herbalism has a long tradition of use outside of conventional medicine.


It is becoming more mainstream as improvements in analysis and quality control along with advances in clinical research show the value of herbal medicine in the treating and preventing disease.

HH175 Medicines from the Earth - Understand the meaning and the origin of the term "herb", antioxidants, free radicals, why grow herbs, and a case study about Rosemary Roast (Walk in the Woods). Learn the different properties of herbs, healing actions, a case study about Humberto Matos (practitioner of oriental medicine), common ailments and herbs for treating them, precautions, and naturopathic doctor.
HH213: Thyme Began in a Garden - Know more about lunar gardening, cycles of the moon, determining your zone, growing zone, choosing your herbs, and choosing herbs for extreme climates. Understand a case study about Ginger Brook Herbs, light preferences of herbs, soil moisture preferences of herbs, herbal planting companions, garden location and style, and container gardening. Learn the properties of certain healing herbs, raised beds, traditional garden, advantages and disadvantages of garden types, garden designs, and examples of healing herb "Green" Foliage variations.
HH386: Useful Healing Herbs - Learn the description, when to plant, sun and soil, when to harvest, parts used, propagation, and medicinal benefits of medicinal herbs namely: Aloe, Angelica, Astragalus, Basil Sweet, Bee Balm, Black-eyed Susan, Boneset, Borage, Calendula, California Poppy, Catnip, Cayenne, Celery, Chamomile, Chicory, Chives, Fennel, and many more.
