Course Syllabus

HD114: General Principles, Instinct, Reason and Natural Development - See the significance of dog training, the effects of giving punishments on puppies, the dogs' pleasure in pursuit and capture, and the dogs' nature. Understand the instincts of pointers and setters, the best manner of development from the sportsman's point of view, dogs' instincts and act of reason, the dog's level of affection for their masters, dogs' characteristics, related works by different authors, and dogs' physical and mental development.
HD201: Natural Qualities and Characteristics, and Punishment and Bad Methods - Know the dogs attacking a prey singly and as a pack, the origin of setter and pointers, the excerpt "The Dogs of the British Islands" (edition of 1867), breaking the dog from hunting its preys, dog's bird shyness, the effects of over-training for dogs, and the effects of using punishment on dogs.
HD323: The best lessons of puppyhood and yard breaking - Understand the difference between a dog in confinement and in liberty, leading the puppy, housebreaking, yard breaking, effectively teaching your puppy, commands for yard lessons, and using collar and whipping.
HD418: Heel and Pointing - Know how to teach the commands Heel, Drop/Down Charge, Hold up and Toho to your dog, admonitory orders, irregular commands, pointing, and the methods that dogs used in capturing birds.
HD590: Backing, Roading, and Drawing - Understand backing, abilities of different breeds with regards to backing, and how dogs locate the birds using roading and drawing.
HD654: Ranging, Dropping to Shot and Wing, and Manifestations of Unsteadiness - Understand the process of ranging, examples of good and bad ranging, quartering, dropping to shot and wing, breaking Shot, breaking in, and chasing, effective training for dogs about chasing rabbits, and effectively using collars for dogs.
HD772: Retrieving and the Natural Method - Understand if retrieving is instinctive or not, disadvantages of finder-retriever, the discussion about natural method, and the advantage and disadvantages of natural method.
HD821: The Force System, Gun-shyness and Blinking, and the Tools of Training - Study the principle behind the Force system, the comparison between the natural and force system, using the "Fetch", "Give" and "Drop" commands in the force system, giving lessons in retrieving a dead bird, the reasons behind the dog's gun-shyness, cure for Gun-shyness, cure for a blinker, and instruments used by the trainer to perfect the dog in his education for work to the gun.
HD930: Field Trial Competition and Kennel Management - Understand handling dogs in a competition, Field works of the Dog, preparations that should be done and should not be done for a field trial competition, qualities needed to win a field trial competition, Qualifications of a Field Trial Judge, Field Trial judging, and managing your dog's food and health.
